Every part of the country has phrases that are unique to the area. Since I am a Southern girl, born and bred, I am partial to Southern phrases. I have chosen thirteen to share today.
1. Bound and determined - committed to do something, no matter what.
2. Coming up a cloud - It's about to start raining.
3. Fixin' to - about to start doing something.
4. D'rectly - as in "I'll be along in a minute (directly).
5. Hear tell - to hear about something.
6. Keep your britches on - Don't be impatient.
7. Nary - not "I ain't got nary a one."
8. Piddlin' around - fooling around. My daddy used the term 'piddlin' all the time. When you would ask what he was doing, he would say he was just piddlin around.
9. I reckon. "I reckon (guess) I'll go with you."
10. Smack dab - Exactly, as in "I dropped that rock smack dab on my foot."
11. Sommers - This does not refer to Suzanne Sommers. This is "it's around here sommers."
12. Swan or swanie - This has nothing to do with a bird or a river. This is used as an exclamation, such as: Well, I'll swan or I'll swanie. Used when you have heard something surprising or unbelievable.
13. Crack the window - Roll down the window.
There are MANY more but I could only pick 13. If you are southern, what is a favorite of yours?
